How is the Bitcoin market cap calculated?

I have not been able to find a decent source that lays it out plainly and most seem to follow:
market cap = (# of bitcoins in existence) X (price)
Anyone know for sure?

Bitcoin's Market Cap and Lost Coins

Bitcoin market cap calculations usually multiply the number of total bitcoins mined times the price, but this overstates the actual market cap because it includes coins that have been lost forever.
Coins that will never move again shouldn't factor into market cap because they will never be sold. For example, Satoshi's 1.2M coins.
Anyways this is kind of rambling, but it's a good thing because the lower market cap means we have more room to run!

I just calculated the bitcoin market cap in the peak of December 2013 and in the peak of June 2016 in euros and the marketcap actually was higher in June 2016.

This comes a little bit late, but here it is. The euro is the second largest currency in the world and I haven't read anything about it, which is not surprising because all the market cap charts are displayed in USD.
So here's the Math:
and
The real milestone is if we break the record high of the major currencies of a bitcoin, but this is quite the milestone and worth mentioning.

Does it even make sense to calculate bitcoins future potential using gold's market cap? Is there really a $1,000,000 moon?

Ok, so, I was doing my usual daydreaming. When suddenly I realized something.
We're pretty US-centric when we talk about bitcoin's value. Mainly in USD, but isn't the closer truth that it will be bits of the entire worlds economy buying into bitcoin?
One figure I found on google was that the total amount of wealth in circulation on Earth was about $270 Trillion USD.
So that figure: Bitcoin market cap of 21 Trillion dollars = 1 million dollar bitcoins. Doesn't. Seem. As. Crazy?
I still don't think that we'll see the full potential of crypto unleashed until we start doing things like asteroid mining. Big - big - projects where it just doesn't make sense to use "dollars" to figure it.
Until then though we have - entire economies - that are NOT built on gold buying into Bitcoin, and strengthening its demand.
Is there any reason to actually hope that bitcoin can surpass gold's value?
We all know diamonds are near worthless. We all know that gold is better used for electronic applications than as a currency. How long till this all breaks down and we move on?

How long does it take for my balance to unlock?

Your balance is unlocked after 10 confirmations (which means 10 mined blocks). A block is mined approximately every two minutes on the Monero network, so that would be around 20 minutes.

How can I prove that I sent a payment?

The fastest and most direct way is by using the ExploreMonero blockchain explorer. You will need to recover the transaction key from your wallet (complete guide for GUI / CLI).

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are dozens of exchanges that trade Monero against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Check out the list on CoinMarketCap and choose the option that suits you best.

How do I buy Monero (XMR) with fiat?

How can I quickly exchange my Monero (XMR) for Bitcoin (BTC)?

There are multiple ways to exchange your Monero for Bitcoin, but first of all, I'd like to remind you that if you really want to do your part for Monero, one of the simplest ways is to get in touch with your merchant/service provider and request for it to accept Monero directly as payment. Ask the service provider to visit the official website and our communication channels if he or she needs help with system integration.
That being said, the community has been recommending two services in particular, XMR.TO and MorphToken. These services are only recommendations and are operated by entities outside the control of the Monero Project. Be diligent.

How do I mine Monero? And other mining questions.

The correct place to ask questions and discuss the Monero mining scene is in the dedicated subreddit MoneroMining. That being said, you can find a list of pools and available mining software in the GetMonero.org website.

2. Wallet: CLI & GUI

Why I can't see my balance? Where is my XMR?

Before any action there are two things to check:
  1. Are you using the latest available version of the wallet? A new version is released roughly every 6 months, so make sure you're using the current release (compare the release on GetMonero.org with your wallet's version on Settings, under Debug info).
  2. Is your wallet fully synchronized? If it isn't, wait the sync to complete.
Because Monero is different from Bitcoin, wallet synchronization is not instant. The software needs to synchronize the blockchain and use your private keys to identify your transactions. Check in the lower left corner (GUI) if the wallet is synchronized.
You can't send transactions and your balance might be wrong or unavailable if the wallet is not synced with the network. So please wait.
If this is not a sufficient answer for your case and you're looking for more information, please see this answer on StackExchange.

How do I upgrade my wallet to the newest version?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange.

Why does it take so long to sync the wallet [for the first time]?

You have decided to use Monero's wallet and run a local node. Congratulations! You have chosen the safest and most secure option for your privacy, but unfortunately this has an initial cost. The first reason for the slowness is that you will need to download the entire blockchain, which is considerably heavy (+70 GB) and constantly growing. There are technologies being implemented in Monero to slow this growth, however it is inevitable to make this initial download to run a full node. Consider syncing to a device that has an SSD instead of an HDD, as this greatly impacts the speed of synchronization.
Now that the blockchain is on your computer, the next time you run the wallet you only need to download new blocks, which should take seconds or minutes (depending on how often you use the wallet).

I don't want to download the blockchain, how can I skip that?

The way to skip downloading the blockchain is connecting your wallet to a public remote node. You can follow this guide on how to set it up. You can find a list of public remote nodes on MoneroWorld.
Be advised that when using a public remote node you lose some of your privacy. A public remote node is able to identify your IP and opens up a range for certain attacks that further diminish your privacy. A remote node can't see your balance and it can't spend your XMR.

How do I restore my wallet from the mnemonic seed or from the keys?

To restore your wallet with the 25 word mnemonic seed, please see this guide.
To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

3. Wallet: Ledger

How do I generate a Ledger Monero Wallet with the GUI or CLI?

This question is beautifully answered on StackExchange. Check this page for the GUI instructions, and this page for the CLI instructions.

4. Nodes

How can my local node become a public remote node?

If you want to support other Monero users by making your node public, you can follow the instructions on MoneroWorld, under the section "How To Include Your Node On Moneroworld".

Name a 2017 / 2018 moonshot IEO that was initially popular and is now either dead or ghosting away - I'll start, SVD

SVD is Savedroid. Savedroid was an ICO in 2018 right at the peak of the mania, not quite at the top price wise, but still when greed was insanely high.
Now SVD raised an incredible $50 million, for an app that simply automates your saving. That's it. In today's environment I can see that going for maybe $500k or so, IF that. Maybe they could call themselves a Defi food coin instead and get some money in via uniswap.
Demand was very high, with all tokens sold in a week. So all it would do is you would set some criteria - say, if I do 10 push ups a day I want to save $1 into BTC, you'll input that and the app would buy the bitcoin with $1. (I have no idea why you couldn't do that manually, but anyway).
Things got off to a bad start when on day 1 the CEO, Yassin Hankir decided to pull a "fake exit scam", with a twitter message "thanks guys, over and out" with the website replaced with the message "...and its gone". He then back pedalled and said actually it was a joke and meant to show case other scammy projects. Investors weren't particularly amused, especially as this coincided with the coin listing, causing the price to plunge into the eternal depths of hell faster than Grin Coin or an FTX listing.
Well that doesn't really matter because the project seems to have died, with the founder moving onto another project, leaving behind an app that is apparently barely functional, and doesn't even allow ICO investors to use their SVD on the platform.
The ICO price was 1 cent - pretty cheap right? Well no, apparently the token price is now $0.0000541 with a daily volume of zero. Market cap it $158k, but no idea how that is calculated. Not exactly a great way to save if you were an investor!
Naturally they have been delisted from all but a couple of obscure DEXes and even there volume is dead (this is despite various promises of top exchanges).
And the cherry on top - last week the project rebranded as "Trumpbit", a new app that does the same thing (converts your money into BTC) by a certain amount each time Trump tweets. Only problem is people are having trouble moving their funds across from one platform to another, lost email addresses etc. I have no idea what happens if Trump loses the election, maybe it will be come Bidenbit or something. This is of course leaving aside the fact that your $50M ICO has rebranded to a coin named after Trump (not a political comment but a bit of a head scratcher).
You can even pop by their reddit sub, where there have been around 4 comments in 1 year, or if you are bold, visit their telegram group to see various howls of outrage and people wondering where their investment has gone.
Name and shame your preferred coin of death!

To restore your wallet with your keys, please see this guide.

xBTC MINT Protocol is going live in few hours!!!

🔴What is xBTC?
One Token access to:
xBTC gives users one token access to every single digital asset on earth, pegged against Bitcoin dominance. We call this a “Dominance Hedge.” As the inferior and sluggish Bitcoin loses its dominance, xBTC holders will benefit. DeFi, Social Networks, Gaming, Smart Contracts – all blockchains are all represented by xBTC. With a few clicks of the mouse, users benefit from access to hundreds of digital assets. This is: diversification, better returns, and innovation - this is xBTC.

🔴What is xBTC MINT Protocol
xBTC mint protocol incentivizes liquidity providers who stake their liquidity pool tokens in the Mint by providing them with xBTC tokens to compensate for the impermanent loss. It is similar to AMPL's Geyser.

🔴 Liquidity Incentives Explained
Users can only deposit xBTC/ETH Liquidity pool tokens into the Mint Version 1. Our timeline for this changing (i.e. adding more pools) will be reactive to the market but we will reassess in 3 months at the latest, however the xBTC/ETH incentives will run for 7 months regardless of other pools opening.

🔴 What can I deposit? xBTC/ETH Uniswap V2 Liquidity Tokens

🔴How are rewards calculated?
This is highly variable, you will receive rewards based on two factors:
  1. How much liquidity you add, the more you add the higher your rewards
  2. How long you stake your liquidity tokens, the longer you stake the higher your rewards
a. The amount of rewards increases linearly from day one, on day one you get 1x rewards, on day 180 you get 3x rewards, pulling out before 180 days would net you somewhere between 1x-3x rewards. After day 180 you continue earning 3x rewards everyday until you unstake.

🔴How many rewards can I earn?
We will aim for a competitive APY based solely on the xBTC rewards, however the results could easily be much higher than the competition depending on how many people stake. On top of this you will be earning fees from the liquidity pool tokens, also any market cap appreciation of Ethereum or xBTC will be realized on your LP tokens (minus impermanent loss). Lastly we will have a 6 month bonus. Our reward structure will look approximately like this: miro.medium.com/max/576/1*Dl8trOggg3k07T5_hxJ90g.jpeg

🔴What is the 6 month bonus?
There will be a separate reward pool for those who support xBTC long term, anyone who keeps their tokens staked for 6+ months (through the end of Mint Version 1) will share the 40,000 xBTC pool. We see this being only a select few who truly share the long term vision of xBTC and we see it being highly rewarding, however that completely depends on how many people stake for a full 6 months. This also means you must stake in the first 4 weeks to be eligible for the 6 month bonus.

🔴Why is the pot split 4 months and 3 months?
We have done this to be responsive to the market. Uniswap V3 may come sooner than later, if this happens we will likely have to reassess and adjust the Mint. We don’t want our users to be stuck providing liquidity on Uniswap V2 if it would be advantageous to switch to V3. With this unknown we wanted to split the terms up, however you don’t have to do anything at 4 months, your tokens will automatically start farming the next 3 month reward pool and you will maintain your bonus (1x-3x depending on how long you have staked).

🔴xBTC and the Mint
The Mint is meant to align our community’s incentives with the project’s incentives. It is also meant to reward our users for supporting our ecosystem. This is a huge step forward for xBTC and acts as an essential part of our long term growth and sustainability. We look forward to continuing to evolve and improve the Mint the build out our ecosystem more broadly and effectively. Thank you to all of our early supports and believers, we are just getting started, onwards and upwards.
